Choosing the right size
- Measure the cabinet width and the depth from the front to the back wall.
- Check the pipe position. A mat that stops short of the pipe will not catch a drip from it.
- Allow a little room at the edges so the mat sits flat under the pipes and the drain.
A mat slightly narrower than the cabinet leaves a gap at the sides, where a drip can run past. A mat much wider than the cabinet will bunch up or curl at the edges. Choose a size that matches the cabinet within an inch or so.
Silicone mats or plastic trays?
Silicone mats cover the whole cabinet floor and catch spills from any direction. They need the right size, and you lift them out to clean. A plastic drip tray is smaller and catches a drip from one point, such as a pipe joint. It does not cover the floor, so use it only if the leak is confined to one spot.
Cleaning and checking the mat
Wipe the mat with mild soap and water and rinse it. Check the cabinet floor each time you clean the mat, since a mat that holds water for long can hide a leak. Replace a mat that cracks, tears, or no longer lies flat. Keep cleaning products that contain bleach or strong solvents away from silicone unless the listing says they are safe to use.
Fitting around pipes and the drain
Most under-sink mats have a cut-out or can be trimmed for the pipes. Trim only the edges you need, and keep the cut-out small so that water still runs into the mat. Check that the drain and the pipe joints sit above the mat rather than on top of a drip.
Worked example: a 34-inch cabinet with a pipe at the back
Say the cabinet is 34 inches wide and the pipe runs about 6 inches from the back wall. A full-width mat covers the floor from front to back. A 14-inch mat would leave most of the floor exposed, so choose the full width and check the drain cut-out before you install it.

Pipes, drains, and the cut-out
Before you buy, look under the sink and note where the supply pipes and the drain come out. Most mats have a flat surface that catches water across the whole floor, but a drain or a supply valve can still sit on the mat and stop it lying flat. If the drain sits in the middle of the cabinet, choose a mat wide enough to pass on both sides of it, and trim only the edges you need.
