Best Floating Shelf Brackets

If you are looking for the best floating shelf brackets, start with the board you plan to use, not the bracket’s load. A hidden bracket only works when its rod or backplate fits the board’s thickness and depth, and the listed load depends on how the bracket is fixed to the wall. This guide compares seven floating shelf bracket listings by rod size, the board they fit, the load each listing states, the fixing it describes and what the kit includes. We read each listing’s title, bullets and spec table, and we give the figures as the listings state them.
Quick answer
- Check the board first. The Craftersmark listing says its 0.39 inch rod fits boards with an actual thickness of 0.75 inch and above, and the Crafterspirit listing says its boards must be 2 inches thick or more. A bracket that does not fit the board cannot be hidden, and the listing’s load does not apply.
- Mount to studs where you can. The Balin and NEODROP listings state their loads for wall studs, and a stud is the fixing the CPSC’s anchoring report points to for furniture.
- The highest pair rating here is 300 lbs, from the two Balin sets. Crafterspirit states 160 lbs per pair, EVALD 100 lbs per pair, and NEODROP 80 lbs per pair for a 12 inch shelf.
- Choose a hidden bracket for a light to medium shelf and an exposed bracket for a heavier one. Several hidden kits in this group give no load figure at all.
How a floating shelf bracket works
A floating shelf bracket is a hidden steel rod or backplate that fits a hole in the back of the board, so the shelf appears to float. The bracket carries the load into the wall through its mounting plate or its rod, and the fixing into the wall decides how much of the listed load you can count on. The sources we opened do not rate floating brackets specifically. They do cover anchoring furniture, which is the nearest guidance, and the CPSC’s 2015 report says that “Drywall anchors are strongest when pulled at an angle parallel to the wall (a shearing force).”
The CPSC anchoring report also says that “Rather, a wood screw is usually provided and must be installed in a stud” for furniture anchoring, which is consistent with the stud-rated figures in the bracket listings below. For a shelf that will hold books or heavy decor, our floating shelves that can hold weight guide covers how shelf loads are planned, and our floating shelves in a small bathroom guide covers a damp room where the fixing and board choice matter more.
The seven listings side by side
Table 1 sets out what each listing states. A hidden bracket has its own fit rule, so the rod or backplate and the board are shown separately from the load.
| Listing (brand) | Hidden part and fit, as written | Listed load, as written | Fixing in the box or bullets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balin Designs, 5 inch rod, 4 pack | 5 inch rod, 3/4 inch diameter, for 5 to 8 inch shelves | Up to 300 lbs per pair | Anchors and a jig included |
| Balin Designs, 8 inch L bracket, 4 pack | Exposed L bracket for 8 to 10 inch shelves | Up to 300 lbs per pair into wall studs | Hardware included, per the title |
| NEODROP, 12 inch, 12 pack | Mounting plate fits 12 to 14 inch boards | 80 lbs max per pair into wall stud centers | Anchors, screws and instructions included |
| EVALD, 8 inch, 4 pack | Hidden bracket for an 8 inch shelf | Up to 100 lbs per pair | Screws and anchors included, per the title |
| Craftersmark, 8 inch, 8 pack | 0.39 inch rod for boards 0.75 inch thick and above | No load figure in the bullets | Brad-point bit, drilling jig and wrench |
| LEOPO, 6 inch, 12 pack | Hidden bracket for 6 inch shelves | Up to 110 lbs, pair or bracket not stated | Screws included |
| Crafterspirit, 8 inch, 8 piece | 1.5 inch backplate for boards 2 inches thick or more | Up to 160 lbs per pair | Auger and spade bits, drilling and routing jigs |
Read the table as a set of maker claims. The LEOPO listing gives 110 lbs without saying whether that is for a pair or a single bracket, so it is the least clear figure in the group. The NEODROP and Balin figures are tied to wall studs, and a bracket fixed into drywall alone is not the same job as one fixed into a stud.
Listing notes
Balin Designs, 5 inch rod, four pack
This is the only hidden bracket in the group with a full install kit and a 300 lbs per pair rating. The bullets describe a 5 inch deep rod with a 3/4 inch or 18 mm diameter, made for shelves 5 to 8 inches deep. They say the kit includes brackets, a drill bit, a jig, a collar, a bubble level and anchors, and that the bracket can be installed into studs, drywall, brick or concrete. The 300 lbs figure is in the bullets and is not repeated for drywall, so a stud is the fixing that matches it. The 5 to 8 inch depth range is the limit to check first.
Balin Designs, 8 inch chrome L bracket, four pack
This Balin set is an exposed L bracket rather than a hidden one. The bullets describe A-36 hot rolled steel, a pair rating of 300 lbs when installed into wall studs, and a shelf depth of 8 to 10 inches. The title says hardware is included. Its spec table gives a size of 7.75 by 1 by 7.75 inches. If a hidden look is your goal, this bracket is the wrong type, but it is the strongest rated option for a stud wall in a small shelf.
NEODROP, 12 inch hidden, twelve pack
The NEODROP twelve-pack is a hidden bracket for 12 to 14 inch shelves. Its bullets state a maximum of 80 lbs per pair when the bracket is mounted into wall stud centers, and they describe a mounting plate that can be installed directly onto standard wood studs. The bullets describe rugged steel with an industrial powder coating, and they say the brackets are for boards that are not included. The 80 lbs figure is the lowest pair rating in the stud-fixed group, so it suits a light to medium shelf rather than a full row of books.
EVALD, 8 inch hidden, four pack
The EVALD listing is a hidden bracket for an 8 inch shelf, sold in a pack of four. Its bullets state support of up to 100 lbs per pair and describe carbon steel. They say the bracket works with standard 2 by 4 studs, drywall, brick and concrete, and that it suits bookshelves and bar wall shelves. The title says screws and anchors are included, and the component list names brick wall plugs. The 100 lbs figure does not say which wall the pair is rated for, so check the fixing against the wall you have.
Craftersmark, 8 inch thin shelf kit, eight pieces
The Craftersmark kit is built for thin boards. Its bullets say the 0.39 inch rod fits boards with an actual thickness of 0.75 inch and above, and they describe the hardware as completely hidden inside the shelf. The kit includes a brad-point bit, a drilling jig and a wrench. The bullets name the steel grade as GR1045, but they give no load rating for the brackets. That makes this kit a good fit for a thin wood shelf and a poor one for a shelf that must carry a stated load.
LEOPO, 6 inch hidden, twelve pack
The LEOPO twelve-pack is a short hidden bracket for shelves about 6 inches deep. Its bullets state a weight capacity of 110 lbs and describe a premium steel body with a black coated finish. They say the bracket fits living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens and offices, and that the hardware is included. The bullets do not say whether 110 lbs applies to a pair or one bracket, so you cannot tell how many brackets a shelf needs. The spec table gives 6 by 2 by 1.25 inches, which is a size for the bracket, not for the shelf.
Crafterspirit, 8 inch hidden, eight piece
The Crafterspirit kit is the only one here that states a backplate thickness. Its bullets describe a galvanized steel bracket with a 1.5 inch diameter and a 5 mm thick backplate, and they say it supports up to 160 lbs per pair. The bullets say the board must be 2 inches thick or more, measured as the actual size and not the nominal size, which is a stricter fit rule than most of the group. The kit includes auger and spade bits, long and short screws, a drilling jig and a routing jig.
Rod size, board thickness and depth
Floating brackets have three fit numbers, and each listing gives a different mix of them. The first is the rod or backplate size. The second is the board thickness the hidden part needs. The third is the depth the bracket is made for. The Balin 5 inch rod is for 5 to 8 inch shelves, the NEODROP mount is for 12 to 14 inch boards, the Balin L bracket is for 8 to 10 inch shelves, and the LEOPO bracket is for a 6 inch shelf. The Craftersmark and Crafterspirit kits give board thickness rather than a depth range.
Check the board before you buy. A solid board that is too thin cannot hide a rod of the listed length, and a board that is much deeper than the bracket’s range will overhang the bracket and load it unevenly. Measure the board’s actual thickness, not the nominal size, because the Crafterspirit bullets say that matters.
Fixing: stud first, anchor second
The fixing decides whether a rated bracket is a rated shelf. These listings describe the following:
- Balin 5 inch rod: anchors and a jig in the kit, and installation into studs, drywall, brick or concrete.
- Balin 8 inch L bracket: hardware included, with the rating given for wall studs.
- NEODROP twelve-pack: anchors, screws and instructions, with the rating for wall stud centers.
- EVALD: screws and anchors included, and the bullets name studs, drywall, brick and concrete.
- Craftersmark: drilling jig, bit and wrench, with no anchor named in the bullets.
- LEOPO: screws included, with no anchor named in the bullets.
- Crafterspirit: drilling and routing jigs and screws, with no anchor named in the bullets.
Toggler’s plastic toggle anchor sheet says that “Industry safety standards recommend using only 1/4 of ultimate tensile and shear values as the maximum load per anchor.” That sentence is about anchors and comes from an anchor maker, so use it as a planning rule for any anchor in the kit. It does not give a rating for a floating bracket.
A checklist for a floating shelf
- Measure the board’s actual thickness and depth. Match the bracket’s rod length, backplate or depth range to the board.
- Find the studs. Choose a stud-rated bracket where you can, and use the stud rating, not the drywall figure, for planning.
- Confirm whether the listed load is per pair or per bracket, and count the pairs your shelf needs.
- Read the kit’s parts list. Make sure the anchors, jig and screws you need are in the box, or buy them to suit your wall.
- Use a level when you fix the brackets, since the listings do not describe a leveling method beyond the bubble level in the Balin kit.
Mistakes to avoid
- Buying a hidden bracket without measuring the board. The Crafterspirit listing needs a board of 2 inches or more, and a thinner board cannot hide its backplate.
- Treating the 110 lbs figure in the LEOPO bullets as a pair rating. The bullets do not say whether it is for a pair or one bracket.
- Mounting the NEODROP or Balin brackets into drywall alone. Their ratings are for wall studs in the bullets.
- Choosing an exposed L bracket for a hidden look. The Balin 8 inch set is visible.
- Assuming the 300 lbs figure applies to every Balin listing. The two Balin sets are different products.
How we chose
We searched Amazon.com for “best floating shelf brackets” in Chrome on 21 October 2026 and read the first page of results. We kept listings whose title or bullets describe a bracket that supports a floating or hidden shelf. We chose seven listings from six brands. Balin appears twice because its two sets differ in fit: one is a hidden 5 inch rod and the other an exposed 8 inch L bracket. We left out a 12 inch Balin floating countertop support, because it is sold for countertops and shower benches rather than shelves, a second Balin 16 inch four-pack to keep one listing per brand, and an 8-piece black listing whose title is close to the Crafterspirit kit’s wording, which we did not open.
For each listing we read the title, the first four bullets and the spec table. Chrome did not give us prices, rankings or ratings in a form we could use, so this guide does not use them.
What we could not verify
- Whether any listed load holds a shelf with books or decor. The sources we opened do not rate floating brackets, and none gives a load for a specific hidden kit.
- Whether the LEOPO 110 lbs figure applies to a pair or one bracket. The bullets do not say.
- The board thickness needed for the Balin rods, the NEODROP mount and the EVALD bracket, since the bullets give depth ranges rather than thickness.
- Whether the anchors in the EVALD and Balin kits suit your wall. The bullets name the wall types but do not give anchor ratings.
- The steel grade, coating and corrosion claims beyond what the bullets say. We did not check those claims.
- The Crafterspirit backplate thickness, which the bullets give as 5 mm, against any independent figure.

FAQ
What is the best floating shelf bracket for a heavy shelf?
Among these listings, the Balin sets state the highest pair rating at 300 lbs per pair, for wall studs. The Crafterspirit hidden kit states 160 lbs per pair for boards 2 inches thick or more. Choose the bracket whose rod, board thickness and fixing match your shelf, then check the rating against the load you plan to hold.
Can a floating shelf bracket go into drywall only?
Some listings say they can be installed into drywall, but the ratings in the bullets are tied to wall studs for the NEODROP and Balin brackets. The CPSC anchoring report says drywall anchors are strongest when pulled parallel to the wall, and it describes a wood screw in a stud as the usual fixing. For a shelf that matters, mount into a stud.
How thick does the board need to be?
The Craftersmark bullets say the 0.39 inch rod fits boards with an actual thickness of 0.75 inch and above, and the Crafterspirit bullets say boards must be 2 inches thick or more. Measure the board’s actual thickness, not its nominal size, before you buy.
Are hidden brackets safer than exposed ones?
The sources we opened do not compare hidden and exposed brackets for safety. A hidden bracket changes how the shelf looks, not how it loads the wall, so the fixing and the rating still decide the result. Use the same checks for both types.
Bottom line
Measure the board, pick a rod or backplate that fits it, and fix the bracket into a stud where you can. A hidden bracket with a stated pair rating and a clear fixing is a better buy than the one with the best-looking finish.
