Best Shelf Brackets for Drywall

If you are looking for the best shelf brackets for drywall, the bracket is only half of the job. Drywall is a thin panel with no structure of its own, and the fixing decides how much of a bracket’s listed load the wall can carry. This guide compares eight bracket listings by the load each one states, the fixing its bullets describe for drywall and wood studs, and the parts each kit includes. We read each listing’s title, bullets and spec table, and we give the figures as the listings state them, with the gaps marked.
Quick answer
- Find a stud before you rely on any rating. The CPSC’s 2015 anchoring report says a wood screw “is usually provided and must be installed in a stud” for furniture anchoring, and that is the fixing the stud-rated listings here assume.
- Drywall anchors are a second choice. The CPSC notes that “Drywall anchors are strongest when pulled at an angle parallel to the wall (a shearing force),” which is why a bracket on drywall alone should be planned at a light load.
- The NEODROP four-pack states 800 lbs max per pair for 16-inch wall stud centers. The EVALD and Aunulahca kits include anchors, but their bullets give no anchor rating, so their drywall loads are unknown.
- Use the light-duty brackets for light shelves. The LSK listing’s title gives a 42 lb max load, and the Alise bullets give a floor of 10 pounds per pair.
Drywall is the wall, not the bracket
Drywall, also called gypsum board or sheetrock, is a panel fixed over a timber or metal frame. The frame is where a shelf bracket gets real support. A bracket fixed only into the board depends on an anchor, and the anchor’s rating, not the bracket’s, sets the limit for that fixing. The bullets on several listings here describe drywall as a suitable wall, but a bullet that names a wall type is not a rating for that wall.
The CPSC’s 2015 anchoring report gives the reasons in its own words. It says that “Drywall anchors are strongest when pulled at an angle parallel to the wall (a shearing force).” A shelf loaded with objects tends to pull on its brackets away from the wall, so the report’s point about angles is a reason to find studs. The report describes the wood screw in a stud as the usual fixing for furniture, so a stud is the reference point for every rating in this guide.
For a shelf with a heavier load, our floating shelves that can hold weight guide covers how to plan the shelf itself, and our small wall shelves for living room guide covers the lighter display shelves that often go on drywall.
The eight listings by wall type
Table 1 sets out each listing’s stated load and the fixing its bullets or title describe. Where a listing names no fixing, the table says so.
| Listing (brand) | Listed load, as written | Fixing for drywall, as written | Fixing for stud, as written |
|---|---|---|---|
| EVALD, 8 inch, 4 pack | Up to 100 lbs per pair | Screws and anchors included | Compatible with 2 by 4 studs |
| Aunulahca, 10 inch, 6 pack | Up to 150 lbs per pair | Drywall anchors and screws included | Not stated |
| Goovilla, 6 inch, 4 pack | Up to 160 pounds per pair | Not stated; screws for different walls | Sized for 2 by 4 wood studs |
| Generic (SEDEME), 12 inch, 6 pack | No load figure in the bullets | Not stated | Not stated |
| qiwuhai, 3.7 by 6 inch, 8 pack | No load figure in the bullets | Not stated | Not stated |
| LSK, 5 by 2 inch, 6 pack | Max load 42 lb in the title | Not stated | Not stated |
| Alise, 5 by 3 inch, 4 pack | At least 10 pounds per pair | Not stated | Not stated |
| NEODROP, 12 inch, 4 pack | 800 lbs max per pair into 16-inch stud centers | Anchors, screws and a level included | 16-inch stud centers |
Read the table as a set of maker claims, and remember that the only stud-rated figure here with a stated spacing is the NEODROP figure. The two lightest ratings in the group are LSK’s 42 lb max load and Alise’s 10 pounds per pair, and neither bullet set names an anchor rating for drywall.
Listing notes
EVALD, 8 inch four pack
The EVALD kit is a hidden 8 inch bracket with screws and anchors in the title. Its bullets describe a carbon steel bracket rated for up to 100 lbs per pair, and they name standard 2 by 4 studs, drywall, brick and concrete as suitable walls. The component list names brick wall plugs, so the kit covers more than one wall type, but the bullets do not give the drywall anchor’s rating. Treat the 100 lbs figure as a pair rating for a stud, and use the included anchors only for a light load on drywall.
Aunulahca, 10 inch six pack
The Aunulahca set is an L bracket for 1 by 12 and 2 by 12 boards. Its bullets give a weight capacity of 150 lbs per pair, describe 5 mm thick steel, and say the drywall anchors and screws needed for installation are included. That is one of two drywall-ready kits in this group that include anchors in the box. The bullets do not give the anchor’s rating, so the 150 lbs figure should not be read as a drywall figure.
Goovilla, 6 inch four pack
The Goovilla bracket is written for wood studs. Its bullets say the backplate is 1.57 by 1.38 inches and that the three screw holes match the narrow 2 by 4 wood stud, which is 1.5 by 3.5 inches actual size. The bullets describe iron coated for durability and say each pair can hold up to 160 pounds. They also say boards are not included and that the package gives screws for different wall mountings, but they do not name a drywall anchor. The stud fit is the strongest point of this bracket.
Generic (SEDEME), 12 inch six pack
The Generic six-pack is a gold iron floating bracket for 12 inch shelves. Its bullets describe nine surface treatment processes, a steel body bent in one piece with no welds, and a hidden base that the plank covers. The bullets do not give a load rating, and the brand field reads Generic with SEDEME as the manufacturer. Use it for the look of a floating shelf on a stud wall, and do not use it for a stated load on drywall.
qiwuhai, 3.7 by 6 inch eight pack
The qiwuhai set is a small hidden L bracket. Its bullets describe anti-rust iron with smooth edges, a triangular design that hides the bracket in the board, and use on bookshelves, cabinet shelves and partitions. The spec table gives a bracket size of 3.7 by 0.63 by 5.9 inches. The bullets do not give a load figure or a fixing, so this set is for a light display shelf, and you should fit it to a stud wherever the shelf is heavier than a few small items.
LSK, 5 by 2 inch six pack
The LSK set is an L bracket sold as light duty. The title gives a max load of 42 lb, and the bullets describe a steel bracket with a matte black finish, 3 mm thick, with hidden screw holes. The bullets name bookshelves, table shelves and chair corners as uses. They do not name a drywall anchor, so a drywall fixing needs its own rating. This is a neat choice for a small shelf that holds a few light items.
Alise, 5 by 3 inch four pack
The Alise set is a white stainless L bracket for light shelves. Its bullets say each pair can withstand at least 10 pounds of weight, and they describe a matte white finish and a thickened stainless body. The bullets suit wood boards and acrylic plates, but they name no fixing and no anchor. The 10 pounds figure is a floor, not a rating for a shelf, so use this kit for a very light display.
NEODROP, 12 inch four pack
The NEODROP four-pack is the only listing here that gives a stud spacing for its load. Its bullets state 800 lbs max per pair when mounted into 16-inch wall stud centers, and they describe Q235 steel with a minimum tensile strength of 60,000 psi. The set includes anchors, screws and a level, and the bullets say the bracket fits a 12 to 14 inch deep shelving board. On drywall, the anchors are a backup. The rating is for studs, so find the studs first.
Stud spacing and finding the wall frame
Stud spacing is the number that connects the NEODROP rating to your wall. The listing states 16-inch stud centers, which means the studs sit 16 inches apart from center to center. Your wall may use a different spacing, so measure it. Mark the studs with a finder, then check the marks with a small nail or a second finder before you drill. The CPSC’s anchoring report describes the consumer’s stud search as a real step, noting that consumers “will need a stud finder (or need to poke holes in the wall to determine the stud’s location).” That job is the first step for any bracket in this group.
Where the studs do not line up with the brackets, use a board that spans two studs, or add a second fixing that the bracket can take. The listings do not describe that method, so treat it as a plan to confirm with the maker before you load the shelf.
Anchors in the box: what to check
Three of the eight listings include anchors: EVALD, Aunulahca and NEODROP. The bullets for each leave the anchor’s rating out, which leaves the drywall load of these kits unknown.
Toggler’s plastic toggle anchor sheet is the only anchor rating source we opened. It says that “Industry safety standards recommend using only 1/4 of ultimate tensile and shear values as the maximum load per anchor.” That sentence is about anchors from an anchor maker, so use it as a planning rule for any anchor in a kit, not as a bracket rating. A bracket’s listed load and an anchor’s maximum are different figures, and the lower one limits the drywall fixing.
Light-duty brackets: where they fit
The LSK, Alise and qiwuhai sets are light-duty in what their bullets or titles state. They suit small items on a dry wall and a small shelf, such as a few frames, spice jars or a plant. They do not suit a full row of books, a bread box or a shelf that will be loaded at one end. The CPSC’s tip-over briefing says that “Use of tipover restraints may only reduce, but not eliminate, the risk of tipover,” which is a reminder that a shelf unit can tip even when its brackets hold. If the shelf is part of a tall unit, anchor the unit as well as the brackets.
A checklist before you drill
- Find the studs and confirm their spacing. If the listing states 16-inch stud centers, check that your wall matches it.
- Match the load to the fixing. For drywall with a kit’s anchors, plan at a light load and keep well below the listed figure.
- Check the depth. Match the bracket to the board, and do not leave an overhang the bracket does not support.
- Read the parts list. Make sure the anchors, screws and level you need are in the box.
- Decide whether the shelf is light or heavy. Use the light-duty sets for a light shelf only, and use a stud-rated set for anything heavier.
Mistakes to avoid
- Relying on the 150 lbs or 100 lbs pair figure for a drywall fixing. Neither bullet set gives an anchor rating.
- Treating the 10 pounds per pair floor on the Alise listing as a shelf rating.
- Using a stud-rated bracket on a wall with no studs in the right place. The NEODROP rating depends on stud centers.
- Assuming a bracket that says it suits drywall will hold the load the same way a stud does.
- Forgetting the tip-over risk on a tall unit. Anchor the unit, not just the brackets.
How we chose
We searched Amazon.com for “best shelf brackets for drywall” in Chrome on 21 October 2026 and read the first page of results. We kept listings whose title or bullets describe a bracket that supports a shelf, and we dropped a 24 pack of wire shelf clips, which are closet clips rather than brackets. We chose eight listings from eight different brands, so no maker appears twice. We left out a 6 inch floating six-pack from Starunder and a second Aunulahca listing for 12 inch brackets, both to keep one listing per brand, and we left out an eight-pack from NEODROP because its bullets repeat the four-pack we chose.
For each listing we read the title, the first four bullets and the spec table. Chrome did not give us prices, rankings or ratings in a form we could use, so this guide does not use them.
What we could not verify
- Whether any listed load holds on drywall. None of the bullets gives a drywall rating for the bracket, and the sources we opened do not rate brackets on drywall.
- The anchor ratings in the EVALD, Aunulahca and NEODROP kits, which the bullets do not give.
- Whether the 16-inch stud spacing in the NEODROP listing matches a typical wall. The listing states it, and we did not check any wall.
- The Generic (SEDEME) load, since no figure is given in the bullets we read.
- The qiwuhai and Goovilla fixing for drywall, since the bullets name no drywall anchor.
- The materials and coatings beyond what the bullets say. We did not check those claims.

FAQ
Can I put a shelf bracket on drywall without a stud?
You can fit some brackets with anchors on drywall, but the listings do not give a drywall rating for the bracket, and the anchor’s own rating sets the limit. The CPSC notes that drywall anchors are strongest when pulled parallel to the wall. For a shelf that will hold more than a few light items, find a stud.
What is the best bracket for drywall with anchors?
Among these listings, the EVALD and Aunulahca kits include anchors, and Aunulahca states 150 lbs per pair. Neither bullet gives the anchor rating, so treat the load as a figure for a stud and use the anchors only for a light shelf on drywall.
How far apart are wall studs?
The NEODROP listing states 16-inch wall stud centers for its rating, which is the spacing that listing assumes. Your wall may differ, so measure it with a stud finder and confirm the spacing before you drill.
Are the light-duty brackets safe on drywall?
The sources we opened do not rate brackets for drywall, so no light-duty figure here is a safety rating. For a light display shelf, a small bracket with its own anchor may be enough, but the sources we opened do not rate that fixing, so check the anchor’s packaging. For anything heavier, use a stud.
Bottom line
On drywall, plan the fixing before the bracket. Find a stud for anything that matters, use the anchors in the box only for light loads, and buy a light-duty set for a light shelf rather than a stud-rated set for a shelf that will never reach its rating.
