Steel Shelving: Four Units Compared by Stated Load

Steel Shelving: Four Units Compared by Stated Load

Disclosure: As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.

The person typing steel shelving wants a metal rack for a garage, pantry or utility room that will hold heavy boxes, tools or bins without bending. This guide compares four steel shelving units we opened on Amazon on 2026-10-27. They are tall wire or rack units from 48 to 72 inches high, with four or five shelves each. Their listings give loads very differently: some state a per-shelf figure and a total, one states only a total, and one is inconsistent about its room type. We show each figure as written.

Quick answer

  • For the highest stated load per shelf, the Amazon Basics 5-shelf unit lists 350 lb per shelf and 1750 lb total when the load is evenly distributed.
  • For the largest total, the VEVOR 5-tier unit lists 2000 lb total, but the listing does not give a per-shelf figure in the fields we read.
  • For a shorter, narrower rack, the Amazon Basics 4-shelf unit is 48 inches high and 23.2 inches wide, and lists 200 lb per shelf and 800 lb total.
  • None of the four lists an anti-tip kit. The CPSC anchoring report is about tall furniture, so plan a fixing before you load the top shelves.

Comparison table

The columns below use only figures that each listing states. “Not stated” means the listing does not give that figure in the fields we read.

Listing (ASIN) Shelves Stated size Stated per-shelf load Stated total load Anti-tip or anchoring
Amazon Basics 5-shelf adjustable wire, Black (B018YLFJX4) 5 36 x 14 x 72 in 350 lb, evenly distributed 1750 lb Not stated; four leveling feet
VEVOR 5-tier adjustable, Powder Coated (B0CC5G4M8F) 5 36 x 18 x 71 in Not stated in the fields we read 2000 lb (spec table lists it as maximum and minimum) Not stated; 16 rubber foot pads
Amazon Basics 4-shelf adjustable wire, Black (B09W2Y51TC) 4 23.2 x 48 x 13.4 in 200 lb, evenly distributed 800 lb Not stated; four leveling feet

How we chose

We searched Amazon for “steel shelving” on 2026-10-27 and skipped the sponsored results. Of the non-sponsored results we captured, we opened four and confirmed each page’s URL contained its ASIN. We picked these four because they cover a range of heights and load figures, from a 48-inch four-shelf unit to a 72-inch five-shelf unit, and because each listing gave enough of its own data to compare. We did not rank the units by price, ratings or reviews, and we did not record those figures.

Because the group is small, the comparison shows what each listing says. It is not a survey of the steel shelving market.

The four units, product by product

1. Amazon Basics 5-shelf adjustable steel wire shelves, Black (B018YLFJX4)

View on Amazon

  • the listing says: 36 x 14 x 72 inches, five shelves, floor mount, black powder-coated steel.
  • the listing says: each shelf holds up to 350 lb evenly distributed, and 1750 lb in total.
  • the listing says: shelf height adjusts in 1-inch increments, with four leveling feet for stability.
  • the listing says: it assembles without tools, and it suits garage, laundry room, kitchen and workspace use.

Skip if you need the shelves to hold items above the stated per-shelf load, or if your floor is uneven. Limitation: the listing describes its leveling feet but does not describe an anti-tip kit or a wall fixing.

2. VEVOR 5-tier adjustable storage shelves, Powder Coated (B0CC5G4M8F)

View on Amazon

  • the listing says: 36 x 18 x 71 inches, five tiers, floor mount, powder-coated.
  • the listing says: a total load capacity of 2000 lb, with SPCC carbon steel and MDF boards.
  • the listing says: press-to-assemble, with no toolbox needed; can be split into two racks.
  • the listing says: sixteen rubber foot pads protect floors, and each shelf height can be clipped to a new position.

Skip if you need a per-shelf figure. The listing gives 2000 lb total and does not give one for each shelf. Limitation: the listing mixes steel and MDF in its description, and the spec table lists 2000 lb as both maximum and minimum. We do not report a per-shelf figure for this unit.

3. Amazon Basics 4-shelf steel wire storage shelves, Black (B09W2Y51TC)

View on Amazon

  • the listing says: 23.2 x 48 x 13.4 inches, four shelves, floor mount, painted black.
  • the listing says: each shelf holds up to 200 lb evenly distributed, and 800 lb in total.
  • the listing says: shelf height adjusts in 1-inch increments, with four leveling feet.
  • the listing says: it assembles quickly with no tools needed.

Skip if you need a unit taller than 48 inches. Limitation: the listing’s recommended use is kitchen and its room type is garage, and it does not say which is the intended setting. No anti-tip kit is described.

4. M MZG 5-tier steel utility shelving unit, Chrome (B0C9WQC9G5)

View on Amazon

  • the listing says: 13.7 x 23.6 x 62.4 inches, five tiers, floor mount, chrome.
  • the listing says: carbon steel with 19.11 mm pipes; each shelf holds up to 250 lb, and the unit up to 1250 lb.
  • the listing says: each shelf height can be adjusted for different item sizes.
  • the listing says: no tools are needed, and the seller responds within 24 hours for missing parts.

Skip if you need a shelf deeper than 13.7 inches for large boxes. Limitation: the spec table lists a “Blinking” feature, which does not match the rest of the listing and is not reported here. No anti-tip kit is described.

Tip-over and anchoring: what the sources say

Steel shelving is tall and narrow, and tip-over is one risk to plan for. A stated load tells you what the shelf can carry, not whether the unit will stay upright when the top shelves are loaded. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s report on anchoring furniture covers tip-over hazards for furniture in general. It does not test steel shelving, and it does not give a load for any of the four units.

The report says that “Staff was unable to find any furniture anchors available for purchase that did not require tools for installation.” It also says that “Drywall anchors are strongest when pulled at an angle parallel to the wall (a shearing force).” If you anchor a steel unit to a wall, the report indicates that a wood screw into a stud is the usual fixing, and that a straight pull on a drywall anchor is the weakest case. None of the four listings describes an anti-tip kit, so you would need to supply one and check its rating.

What we could not verify

  • None of the four listings describes an anti-tip kit or a wall fixing.
  • The VEVOR listing does not give a per-shelf figure in the fields we read.
  • The Amazon Basics 4-shelf listing’s room type and recommended use disagree.
  • The M MZG listing’s “Blinking” feature is not explained, and we did not treat it as a product feature.
  • We did not open any manufacturer’s instructions or the product’s warning labels, so we cannot say what they recommend for anchoring.

Buying checklist

  • Measure the height and footprint first. The four units run from 48 to 72 inches tall.
  • Compare loads on the same basis. The Amazon Basics units state per-shelf loads; the VEVOR states a total only; the M MZG states both.
  • Check the leveling. The Amazon Basics and VEVOR listings mention leveling feet or rubber pads, which matters on an uneven garage floor.
  • Plan the fixing for any unit over about five feet, and put the heaviest items on the lowest shelves.
  • Confirm the finish and the room type if you plan to use the shelves in a kitchen or garage, because the listings differ.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Loading the top shelves first. A tall unit with heavy items at the top is the situation the CPSC guidance is about, so keep weight low.
  • Treating the total as the per-shelf limit. The Amazon Basics 5-shelf lists 1750 lb total and 350 lb per shelf; no single shelf is rated for the total.
  • Assuming the VEVOR total applies to each shelf. The listing gives 2000 lb total; it does not give a per-shelf figure.
  • Skipping the fixing because the unit is freestanding. None of the four listings describes an anti-tip kit.
  • Buying by height alone. A 72-inch unit is a different risk from a 48-inch unit, even when the loads look similar.

Where to go next

For a steel unit with a stated 5-shelf layout, see Hyper Tough 5-shelf metal storage rack and Homedant 5-tier metal shelving, which compare individual units. Readers choosing between two freestanding racks can look at Plano vs VEVOR standing shelf units and OUTNILI vs Sttoraboks storage racks. For a utility shelf used in a garage, Sakugi vs SONGMICS utility shelves compares two more. For kitchen and pantry use, condiments storage racks covers narrower units. If you are hanging a wire shelf in a closet, the ClosetMaid wire shelf weight limit guide explains how to read a stated shelf load. For a smaller rack near a sink, see sink storage racks, and for a bedroom option, small clothes racks for a bedroom.

FAQ

How much weight can a steel shelving unit hold?

The Amazon Basics 5-shelf lists 350 lb per shelf and 1750 lb in total. The Amazon Basics 4-shelf lists 200 lb per shelf and 800 lb in total. The M MZG lists 250 lb per shelf and 1250 lb in total. The VEVOR lists 2000 lb total and does not give a per-shelf figure in the fields we read.

Do steel shelving units need to be anchored?

Tall units can tip, and none of the four listings describes an anti-tip kit. The CPSC report on anchoring furniture says that “Staff was unable to find any furniture anchors available for purchase that did not require tools for installation.” If you anchor a unit, use a fixing rated for the load and check it before you rely on it.

Which unit is the tallest?

The Amazon Basics 5-shelf is the tallest in this set at 72 inches. The VEVOR is 71 inches tall, and the M MZG is 62.4 inches. The Amazon Basics 4-shelf is 48 inches tall. Check the ceiling height and the room before you buy.

Can a steel shelving unit be used in a kitchen?

The Amazon Basics 4-shelf and the Amazon Basics 5-shelf both list kitchen use. The VEVOR lists kitchen and pantry use. The M MZG lists kitchen and laundry use. The listings do not say whether they are suitable for food storage, so check the product page for any food-contact statements.

Why do the room types differ across listings?

The Amazon Basics 4-shelf lists garage as the room type and kitchen as its recommended use. The listings are not consistent, and we report them as written. The use you intend is what matters for the shelf’s load.

Is a steel shelving unit the same as a wire shelf?

Two of the listings are wire shelves (Amazon Basics 4-shelf and 5-shelf), and the M MZG is a rack shelf. The VEVOR is a tiered shelf with MDF boards and steel. The shape changes how items sit on the shelf, so check the shelf type against what you will store.

Bottom line

Choose steel shelving by height, per-shelf load and fixing. The Amazon Basics 5-shelf gives the highest per-shelf figure in this group, and the M MZG gives a per-shelf and total figure in a narrower footprint. The VEVOR has the largest total but no per-shelf figure. Whatever you buy, keep heavy items low, and plan an anti-tip fixing for any unit taller than about five feet.
