Best Shelf Brackets for Books

If you are looking for the best shelf brackets for books, the bracket matters less than the wall and the shelf it holds. Books add weight quickly, and a bracket with a good listed load can still fail if it is fixed to drywall alone or sits under a board that is too deep for it. This guide compares six bracket listings for shelves that will hold books. We read each listing’s title, bullets and spec table, and we give the figures as the listings state them, with the gaps marked.
Quick answer
- Put the brackets into wall studs when a shelf will hold a full row of books. The CPSC anchoring report says a wood screw “is usually provided and must be installed in a stud” for furniture anchoring, and it notes that drywall anchors are strongest when pulled parallel to the wall.
- The highest pair rating here is the Balin set, at 300 lbs per pair when installed into wall studs. The LEOPO listing states 160 lbs per pair, and WEKIS gives 160 lbs to 200 lbs for every two brackets. Those are listing claims, and none of the sources we opened rates a bracket for books.
- Choose by the board, not the pack. Check the depth each listing gives, and buy enough pairs for the full length of the shelf.
- Do not assume a bracket for display shelves will suit a full bookcase. The REHOYEE pair is rated at 20 lbs, which is a light-duty figure for small books and decor.
Why books change the choice
Books are dense, and a shelf full of them loads the bracket differently from a shelf of plates or photographs. The listings in this group do not state the weight of the books they are meant to carry, and the sources we opened do not give a book weight either. That leaves you to work out the load from the shelf length, the number of books and the pair rating. Do not do that calculation with one listing’s figure alone.
The bigger risk is the shelf and its tip-over. The CPSC’s 2016 staff briefing on furniture tip-over says that “Use of tipover restraints may only reduce, but not eliminate, the risk of tipover.” A shelf or bookcase that is heavy at the top can tip, and a bracket on its own does not stop that. Anchor the unit to the wall where it can be anchored, and treat the bracket as one part of that anchoring.
The CPSC’s 2015 anchoring report also says drywall anchors “are strongest when pulled at an angle parallel to the wall (a shearing force).” The report’s point about shear is one reason to prefer studs for a bookshelf, though none of the sources we opened rates a shelf of books. For larger units, our floating shelves that can hold weight guide covers how shelf loads are planned, and our small wall shelves for living room guide covers smaller display shelves.
The six listings side by side
Table 1 sets out what each listing states. Where a listing gives two figures or a range, both are shown. Where it gives none, the table says so.
| Listing (brand) | Listed load, as written | Size and depth, as written | Fixing in the box |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balin Designs, 12 inch, 4 pack | Up to 300 lbs per pair when installed into wall studs | Suits a 12 to 14 inch shelf | Screws included; no anchor named |
| REHOYEE, 12 x 10 inch, 20 pack | Up to 20 lbs per pair | 12 x 10 inch brackets | Long screws and short screws included |
| LEOPO, 12 inch J bracket, 6 pack | Up to 160 lbs per pair | Fits 1 x 12 and 2 x 12 boards | Screws; no anchor named |
| WEKIS, 12 inch, 6 pack | Every two brackets carry 160 lbs to 200 lbs | 10 inch and 12 inch lengths offered | Drywall anchors and concrete fixings included |
| Aunulahca, 10 inch, 6 pack | Up to 150 lbs per pair | Fits 1 x 12 and 2 x 12 boards | Drywall anchors and screws included |
| Starunder, 6 inch hidden, 6 pack | Up to 150 lbs per pair | Listing gives a 6 inch size, no depth range | Screwdriver bits; anchors not named |
Read the table as a set of maker claims. Two listings give figures that look wrong for what they describe. The LEOPO spec table gives 7.25 x 1.5 x 4 inches, while its bullets describe an 11.25 inch board, and the WEKIS spec table gives a package size of 144 x 18 x 72 inches. Neither spec figure changes the load claim, but both show that the spec table needs checking before you buy.
Listing notes
Balin Designs, 12 inch four pack
The Balin set is the only one here that states a pair rating for wall studs, at 300 lbs per pair. Its bullets describe A-36 hot rolled steel brackets that suit 12 to 14 inch shelf depths, and the bullets say the brackets support floating shelves, book shelf brackets and closet shelves. That is the clearest match to a bookshelf in the group. The listing does not name an anchor for drywall, so a stud is the fixing the rating depends on, and a board that is wider than the bracket’s listed depth needs a second look.
REHOYEE 12 x 10 inch, 20 pack
The REHOYEE listing is a light-duty choice. Its bullets say each pair holds up to 20 lbs, and they describe the brackets for displaying books, decor and kitchenware. The pack gives 20 brackets, which is enough for several small shelves, but a row of books on one shelf is a different job. The bullets suggest adding more brackets for a heavier load, which is a sensible note, and they give no figure above 20 lbs per pair. Use this set for light decor or small books, and skip it for a full row.
LEOPO 12 inch J bracket, six pack
LEOPO’s six-pack is a J-style bracket for 1 by 12 and 2 by 12 boards. Its bullets say the bracket carries up to 160 lbs per pair and describe a 5 mm thick steel body with a black powder coating that resists rust and peeling. The bullets also say the shelf board is not included, which means you choose the wood. The bullets do not name an anchor, so the fixing is the part to check before a heavy load goes on the shelf. The spec table gives a smaller size than the bullets, which is one more reason to measure the bracket yourself.
WEKIS 12 inch, six pack
WEKIS offers a choice of two lengths, 10 inch and 12 inch, and the bullets say the set comes in 4, 6 and 8 packs. The bullets describe a solid cast iron bracket with a matte black rustproof coating, and they say that every two brackets can carry a weight of 160 lbs to 200 lbs. That range is wider than a single pair rating, so it is not clear which figure applies to your shelf. The package includes long screws, short screws, drywall anchors and concrete fixings, which is useful if you have more than one wall type. The spec table’s package size does not match the product, so do not use it for planning.
Aunulahca 10 inch, six pack
The Aunulahca set is a 10 inch L bracket that fits 1 by 12 and 2 by 12 boards. Its bullets give a weight capacity of 150 lbs per pair and describe 5 mm thick steel. It is one of two listings in this group that include drywall anchors, along with screws, and the bullets say the set includes them. The bullets do not give the anchor’s rating, so you should check the anchor against your wall. For a short shelf on drywall, this is the listing here that puts the fixing in the box.
Starunder 6 inch hidden, six pack
The Starunder set is the smallest bracket in the group, at 6 inches. Its bullets describe thick iron with a black matte coating, a rating of up to 150 lbs per pair, and a hidden design with no visible hardware. The bullets name books, plants and photos among the items the shelf can hold. They do not give a depth range for the board, and the box includes screwdriver bits rather than anchors. That makes this set best for a small hidden shelf with a light load, and a poor match for a wide bookcase.
Matching the bracket to the board
The bracket and the board have to agree on depth. The Balin listing gives a range of 12 to 14 inch shelf depths, and the LEOPO and Aunulahca boards are 1 by 12 and 2 by 12 lumber. Those board sizes are lumber sizes, not finished widths, so measure the board you will actually buy. The Starunder bracket gives no depth range, and the WEKIS listing offers two lengths, so match the length to the board’s depth before you buy.
Overhang matters too. A board that runs well past the bracket is supported only partly by it, and the far end of the shelf takes more of the book load than the bracket’s rating assumes. Keep the board within the depth range the listing names, and place the brackets near the ends of the board. That is ordinary shelf practice, and none of the listings gives a different rule.
Fixing: studs first, anchors second
Here is the fixing each listing describes, so you can see which sets are ready for a wall without studs and which are not:
- Balin: screws included, and the pair rating is for wall studs.
- REHOYEE: long and short screws for mounting and for attaching boards, with no anchor named.
- LEOPO: screws included, with no anchor named in the bullets.
- WEKIS: drywall anchors and concrete fixings included.
- Aunulahca: drywall anchors and screws included.
- Starunder: screwdriver bits included, with no anchor named.
Toggler’s plastic toggle anchor sheet says that “Industry safety standards recommend using only 1/4 of ultimate tensile and shear values as the maximum load per anchor.” That sentence is from an anchor maker and is about anchors, so use it only as a general planning rule for any anchor in the box. A bracket’s listed load is a different figure, and it does not replace the anchor’s own rating.
A checklist for a bookshelf
- Find the studs and mark them. A bookshelf that carries a full row of books should go into studs where you can reach them.
- Estimate the shelf load from the number of books and the shelf length, then compare that with the pair rating, and leave a margin.
- Match the bracket’s depth to the board. Stay within the depth range the listing gives.
- Confirm the fixing in the box. If the bullets name no anchor for your wall, buy one that suits the wall and check its rating.
- Anchor the bookcase or tall shelf unit to the wall as well, since the CPSC’s tip-over briefing notes that restraints reduce the risk without removing it.
Mistakes to avoid
- Putting a full row of books on a 20 lbs per pair set. The REHOYEE bullets give that rating, and it is a light-duty figure.
- Relying on a range without knowing which pair it applies to. The WEKIS bullets give a range of 160 lbs to 200 lbs for every two brackets.
- Fixing a bookshelf into drywall alone. The CPSC anchoring report says drywall anchors are strongest when pulled at an angle parallel to the wall, and a stud is the stronger fixing.
- Trusting the spec table over the bullets. The LEOPO and WEKIS spec tables disagree with their bullets on size.
- Buying a short bracket for a deep board. Match the length to the board’s depth.
How we chose
We searched Amazon.com for “best shelf brackets for books” in Chrome on 21 October 2026 and read the first page of results. We kept listings whose title or bullets describe a bracket for a shelf, and we left out shelf pins, wire shelf clips and one listing whose title we could not read in full. We chose six listings from six different brands, so each maker appears once. Several bracket listings from the same results were left out because the set was capped at six, and because a second listing from a brand already in the set would have repeated the first.
For each listing we read the title, the first four bullets and the spec table. Chrome did not give us prices, rankings or ratings in a form we could use, so this guide does not use them.
What we could not verify
- Whether any listed load will carry a full row of books. The sources we opened do not give a book weight, and none of them rates a bracket for books.
- Whether the LEOPO spec table size or the WEKIS package size reflects the product. The bullets and the spec table disagree in both cases.
- The WEKIS load, which is a range of 160 lbs to 200 lbs for every two brackets, and the pair it applies to.
- The anchor ratings in the WEKIS and Aunulahca boxes, which the bullets do not give.
- Whether the REHOYEE figure of 20 lbs per pair is the only rating it carries, since the bullets give no other figure.
- The materials and coatings beyond what the bullets say. We did not check those claims.

FAQ
What is the best shelf bracket for a shelf of books?
Among these listings, the Balin set states the highest pair rating for wall studs, at 300 lbs per pair, and that is the clearest match to a bookshelf in the group. The LEOPO listing states 160 lbs per pair for a 1 by 12 or 2 by 12 board. Pick the bracket whose depth and fixing fit your wall, and do not choose by the number alone.
How much weight can a shelf of books hold?
The listings do not give a book weight, and the sources we opened do not either, so no figure here describes a full shelf of books. Estimate the weight from the number of books and the shelf length, then compare that with the pair rating and leave a margin.
Can I put brackets for books on drywall?
You can, if the listing includes a drywall anchor rated for the load, but the rating is the anchor’s, not the bracket’s. The CPSC anchoring report says drywall anchors are strongest when pulled parallel to the wall, and it describes a wood screw in a stud as the usual fixing. For a full row of books, a stud is the safer choice.
Do I still need to anchor a bookcase if the brackets are rated?
Yes. The CPSC’s 2016 staff briefing says that tip-over restraints “may only reduce, but not eliminate, the risk of tipover.” A rated bracket supports the shelf, but it does not stop a tall unit from tipping, so anchor the unit where it can be anchored.
Bottom line
For a bookshelf, pick a bracket that is fixed into wall studs, matches the board’s depth and has a pair rating that clears your estimated book load with room to spare. Anchor the unit as well, because the bracket is only one part of a bookcase that stays up.
